Lima coffee scene

Peru · 18 hand-picked cafés

Lima occupies a rare position in the global coffee world: it is both the capital of a major arabica-producing nation and an increasingly sophisticated consuming city. Peru is among the top ten coffee exporters worldwide, with celebrated growing regions in Cajamarca, Cusco, Junin, and San Martin producing high-altitude washed and natural lots that score regularly above 85 points. For most of the twentieth century those beans left the country without Peruvians tasting them; since roughly 2010 a small group of Lima-based roasters decided to claim them.

The specialty scene is concentrated in two distinct clusters. Barranco, the city's bohemian coastal neighborhood, hosts the country's founding institution, Tostaduria Bisetti, alongside newer operations like Ciclos Cafe, Coleccionista Coffee, and Caleta Dolsa that each bring a distinct identity to single-origin Peruvian brewing. Miraflores, the walkable residential and commercial district to the north, holds the highest density of third-wave cafes in Lima, from Neira Cafe Lab, whose owner won the national barista championship, to RAIZ, which opened in 2023 with a farmer-forward sourcing model. Secondary clusters in Pueblo Libre and San Isidro have grown since 2020 as roasters like Origen Tostadores expanded beyond their original footprints.

What distinguishes Lima from other Latin American specialty capitals is the directness of origin access: most serious cafes here work with producers in the same country, often the same mountain range, and conversations about terroir carry an immediacy rarely found elsewhere. The Peruvian Q Grader community is active, direct-trade premiums are becoming standard, and festivals such as Cafesazo Peruano in Pueblo Libre draw thousands each year. The result is a city where a visitor can drink a Cusco natural processed at the same address where it was roasted, served by someone who may have visited the farm.
