Costa Rica · 16 hand-picked cafés

Costa Rica has built its reputation as a coffee-origin country on a combination of geographic advantage and regulatory discipline. The country's volcanic soils, consistent rainfall, and altitude range of 1,200 to 1,800 meters across eight distinct regions, including Tarrazu, Central Valley, West Valley, Guanacaste, Tres Rios, Turrialba, Brunca, and Orosi, produce washed arabica lots of reliable quality. A national law passed in 1989 prohibits the cultivation of robusta, meaning every bag labeled Costa Rican is arabica by law. This legislative backbone, combined with a tradition of micro-mill processing in which small farms control their own wet-milling and drying, has made the country a natural source of traceable single-estate coffees.

San Jose's specialty cafe scene is moderate in size compared to coffee capitals like Melbourne or Portland, but it is genuine and growing, with Barrio Escalante functioning as its undisputed center. This residential neighborhood just east of downtown has quietly become one of Central America's densest concentrations of independent restaurants, specialty roasters, and craft-focused cafes. Cafeoteca, which opened in 2013 inside a restored 1950s house, is widely credited with establishing the neighborhood's coffee credibility, and it remains the benchmark for single-origin brewing in the city. Libertario Coffee Roasters, Underground Brew, and Dulce Junio have since joined the corridor, giving Escalante a walkable cluster of specialty options within a few blocks. Beyond Escalante, Los Yoses adds depth with Cumpanis and Sikwa, the Sabana and Rohrmoser districts have Buena Vida Coffee Roasters, and Escazu offers the singular botanical experience of Coffea Diversa inside Multiplaza.

What distinguishes the San Jose scene from other Latin American coffee cities is the directness of the farm connection. Baristas in Escalante can often name the specific micro-mill or estate behind the coffee they are preparing, and several cafes, including Cafeoteca and Coffea Diversa, either own their supply chain or visit farms personally. The chorreador, a traditional Costa Rican cloth-drip method, appears alongside V60 and AeroPress in several menus, grounding the specialty movement in national brewing tradition rather than pure imitation of Northern Hemisphere trends. The scene rewards visitors who are willing to walk Barrio Escalante in the morning and travel slightly west or east to catch the roastery cafes that anchor the outer neighborhoods.
