Italy · 26 hand-picked cafés
Rome is not the obvious choice for a specialty coffee pilgrimage. The city's coffee identity runs deep: a ristretto standing at a marble bar, no eye contact, out in thirty seconds. That tradition is still alive and worth respecting. What has changed since 2016 is the arrival of operators who grew up loving Italian espresso but wanted more: single-origin traceability, honest extraction, beans whose provenance they could explain. Faro opened that year near Villa Borghese and planted the flag; Aliena Coffee Roasters grew from it as Rome's first serious in-house roasting project. The scene spread outward from there: Barnum and Roscioli in the historic centre, LOVE and Casa Matti in Prati, Fax Factory in bohemian Pigneto, Marigold and Mostro anchoring the Ostiense regeneration. Today the specialty map covers every quadrant, from Flaminio to EUR, and the best bars compete with London or Berlin without apologising for being Roman about it. The scene remains small enough that most owners know each other, and thoughtful enough to take the city's espresso heritage seriously.
