Calgary, by the cup
Canada · 13 hand-picked cafés
Calgary punches well above its weight in specialty coffee, producing more barista champions per capita than almost any other Canadian city. The scene is anchored by a cluster of serious in-house roasters - Phil and Sebastian, Monogram, Rosso, Gravity, Sought x Found, and Analog - whose founders and head baristas have collectively won the Canadian Barista Championship more than a dozen times and competed at the World Barista Championship in Milan. That competitive DNA shows up in the cups: clean espresso, carefully sourced single origins, and a culture that values precision without pretension.
The city's geography shapes the coffee map in useful ways. Inglewood and Ramsay along the east bank of the Bow River concentrate working roasteries and neighbourhood bars with a warehouse-cool aesthetic. The Beltline, Calgary's densest inner-city district, clusters multi-roaster filter bars and all-day cafes within easy walking distance of each other. To the northwest, Kensington and Sunnyside have long supported legacy independents like The Roasterie, which has been roasting on site for over forty years. Marda Loop, Altadore, Britannia, and the University District each host a destination-worthy outpost, making Calgary a genuine city-wide coffee tour.
Fresh arrivals have added range to the established scene. Paradigm Spark opened its first brick-and-mortar roastery cafe in late 2025 in Victoria Park, while Qamaria brought Yemeni-sourced beans and late-night hours to 17th Avenue, and Q.lab by Chronicle offers a dedicated tasting-room format in the Beltline. The result is a city where a traveler can move from a champion barista's precision espresso to a decades-old roastery to a pour-over science lab in the same afternoon.
