Bucharest, by the cup
Romania · 21 hand-picked cafés
Bucharest arrived on the European specialty coffee map later than Prague or Warsaw, but has accelerated with unusual speed. The turning point was 2013, when Origo opened on Strada Lipscani as both the city's first specialty cafe and its first house roastery, giving the scene a production anchor from day one. Within a decade the city had grown to more than thirty verified specialty venues and several champion-level roasters - including World Coffee Roasting Vice-Champion Bogdan Georgescu of MABO, 2016 World Coffee Roasting Champion Alexandru Niculae of BOB Coffee Lab, and the team behind Meron, whose baristas have held the Romanian national title multiple years in a row - a concentration of competition pedigree that is genuinely rare at this city scale.
The geography of specialty coffee in Bucharest maps onto the city's layered urban fabric. The Old Town core around Strada Lipscani and Piata Unirii hosts the most visitor-accessible cluster, anchored by Origo and Emozia Coffee Manifesto. North of the centre, the Dorobanti and Floreasca axis concentrates several of the most ambitious venues: BOB Coffee Lab in a belle-epoque villa at Charles de Gaulle square, Steam with its Victoria Arduino espresso program near Aviatorilor, and MABO ONE on Petru Rares. Calea Victoriei, the city's historic commercial spine, gathers Artichoke, Cascara, and Sloane in a single walkable strip. Quieter residential pockets - Icoanei for Prajitoria Buimac, Cismigiu for Meron, the Jewish quarter near Stefan Mihaileanu for Coftale - reward those willing to walk a few blocks from the tourist trail.
What distinguishes Bucharest from comparable Eastern European capitals is the depth of home-grown production. Multiple house roasters operate their own cafes and supply a growing wholesale market, meaning the city's specialty scene is not dependent on imported beans or imported concepts. Prices remain very accessible by Western European standards, baristas are consistently well-trained and hospitality is genuine. The pace of openings since 2020 and the ongoing flow of competition medals suggest that Bucharest's most interesting chapter is still being written.
