Germany · 45 hand-picked cafés
Berlin's specialty coffee scene is one of the most consequential in Europe. Beginning in the early 2000s with pioneering roasters in Prenzlauer Berg, the city developed a distinct coffee culture defined by direct trade, single-origin filter programs, and a refusal to treat espresso as a commodity. The Kaffeeviertel, a dense cluster of cafes and roasteries around Rykestrasse and Oderberger Strasse, became a reference point for specialty coffee across the continent.
Today the scene spans all of Berlin's inner neighborhoods, from the gallery-district minimalism of The Barn's Mitte flagship to the courtyard roasteries of Kreuzberg, the brunch-and-filter culture of Friedrichshain, and emerging addresses in Neukölln that push transparency in sourcing further than most markets dare. Berlin roasters, among them Bonanza, Five Elephant, The Barn, 19grams, and Fjord, export globally while maintaining street-level cafes where locals drink the same lots.
The culture rewards curiosity. Many of the best cups are found in courtyards, former concierge huts, and quiet side streets that reward visitors who look past the obvious. Berlin coffee is serious without being precious, and the city's combination of low rents, high standards, and internationally mobile barista talent continues to make it one of the world's most interesting places to drink.
