United States · 15 hand-picked cafés
Houston is one of the most underestimated specialty coffee cities in the United States, a fact that became impossible to ignore when it hosted the 2025 Specialty Coffee Expo and drew 17,000 industry professionals from 85 countries. The city's scene is anchored by a cluster of serious house roasters - Greenway Coffee (roasting since 2009), Tenfold, Amaya, BlendIn, Xela, and Little Dreamer - alongside multi-roaster bars and cafes that source from them. What makes Houston distinctive is how deeply its coffee culture reflects the city itself: it is diverse, non-hierarchical, and built across a sprawling geography rather than concentrated in a single district.
Montrose, the Heights, and EaDo form the strongest nodes of specialty coffee activity. Montrose has Blacksmith, Siphon, Agora, and the original Catalina Coffee along Washington Avenue. The Heights clusters Boomtown, Tenfold's roastery, Simply Coffie, and Third Place inside a walkable stretch of 19th and 20th Streets. EaDo and the Second Ward hold the city's most culturally rooted cafes - Koffeteria, a two-time James Beard semifinalist blending Cambodian flavor into pastry; OSO Coffee Co, named for a founder's mother and famous for scratch horchata lattes; and Xela Coffee Roasters, sourcing rare lots and roasting for a walkup window crowd. Downtown has Boomtown's Understory outpost and Fifth Vessel, which roasts and pours its own beans steps from the convention center.
The 2026 CultureMap Tastemaker Award for best coffee shop went to Un Caffe Roastery in Midtown, whose Korean-born founder Soonkack Kook trained as a Q grader and SCA trainer and produces some of the most precise in-house roasted espresso in the city. BlendIn Coffee Club's Allen Parkway location is run by 2024 US Brewers Cup champion Weizhong Zhang and operates one of the country's few SCA premier training campuses. Houston coffee is competitive, community-minded, and quietly world-class.
