Geneva, by the cup
Switzerland · 17 hand-picked cafés
Geneva sits at a crossroads that suits specialty coffee perfectly: a small, densely international city where watchmakers, diplomats, and UN staff share pavement with baristas who have competed at World Brewers Cup level. The city hosted the SCA's World of Coffee trade show in June 2025, a signal that Geneva had moved well beyond a supporting role in the European coffee story. Its roasting culture is compact but serious, with Boreal (founded 2009), MAME, Corde, Valmandin, Utopia, and Greenwheel all roasting within the canton.
The neighbourhood spread is wide. Eaux-Vives, the residential quarter closest to the Jet d'Eau, has become the densest specialty cluster, with Corde, CHOU, and My Little Cup all within easy walking distance of the lake. Plainpalais - student-heavy and gallery-lined - hosts MAME's flagship and Boreal's largest Geneva cafe. Paquis, the multicultural district north of Cornavin station, has Filomena and Cafe Calico drawing filter-focused drinkers, while the Old Town (Cite) rewards a detour to Ferdinand on Place du Bourg-de-Four. Carouge, the Sardinian-founded village absorbed into Geneva, adds Valmandin's intimate roastery-shop on Rue Ancienne.
What distinguishes Geneva's scene is precision and restraint rather than volume. Portions of the city's cafes are small and deliberate, often run by founder-baristas with competition pedigree. Alt-milk options are standard, laptop culture is tolerated at most mid-sized venues, and outdoor terraces matter enormously to a city that lives outdoors from April to October. The visitor who arrives expecting Swiss conservatism will instead find a quietly confident specialty scene that punches well above the city's modest size.
