Founded in 1938 and revived in 2008 by local volunteers, Kayaba Coffee is a beautifully preserved machiya-style kissaten in the heart of Yanaka that won a Taito Ward scenic-corner award for its dashigeta-zukuri eaves. The legendary egg sandwich, Russian coffee (coffee blended with cocoa), and carefully hand-dripped cups represent the best of Tokyo's historic café culture. Reservations are essential; the building itself is a landmark of old Shitamachi.
