Busan, by the cup
South Korea · 15 hand-picked cafés
Busan has quietly become South Korea's most exciting coffee city, fueled by a concentration of world-class baristas that no other Korean city can match. The 2019 World Barista Champion and the 2021 World Cup Tasters Champion both call Busan home, and the city hosted the World of Coffee championship in 2024 - a stamp of international recognition earned through years of grassroots specialty culture. From the industrial port district of Yeongdo to the canal-lined alleys of Jeonpo, quality coffee is woven into nearly every neighborhood.
The geography of Busan shapes its cafe scene in ways Seoul cannot replicate. Roasters have colonized cliffside perches above the East Sea, converted harbor warehouses into cathedral-scale brew spaces, and planted precision filter bars in walkable beach neighborhoods. Gwangalli and Haeundae attract the design-forward crowd; Jeonpo Cafe Street is the spiritual home of Korean specialty coffee, where Blackup Coffee opened in 2006 and helped establish the template the rest of the country eventually followed. Yeongdo, once purely industrial, is now a pilgrimage destination for coffee travelers.
The current scene blends home-grown roasters - many of them competition veterans - with outposts of respected international brands drawn by the city's coffee-literate audience. Light-roasted filter coffee dominates serious bars, but Busan's coastal identity means there is room for drama: ocean-view terraces, award-winning architecture, and cold brew poured against backdrops of fishing boats and breaking waves. Whatever your preferred brew method, you will find it done seriously here.
